November Is the Great American Smokeout

The American Cancer Society marks the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November each year. This event encourages smokers to use that date as a starting point for making a plan to quit smoking.  Some smokers use the Smokeout as their day to quit. By quitting, smokers take a major step toward a healthier life.

Smoking tobacco--whether in cigarettes, cigars or pipes--is the single largest preventable cause of disease and early death in the United States. About 43.8 million Americans still smoke cigarettes--nearly 1 in 5 adults. As of 2010, there were also 13.2 million cigar smokers and 2.2 million who smoked a pipe.

Smoking can lead to various forms of cancer, lung diseases such as emphysema, and heart disease. If  you want to get pregnant or are pregnant, be aware that smoking can put your unborn child at risk.

For those who want to quit, help is available. Visit www.cancer.org to learn more about the Great American Smokeout and ways to quit smoking. Your healthcare provider can also offer recommendations that can help you break the tobacco habit. It may be the single most important choice you make toward improving your health and prolonging your life.

Partners for Women's Health Receives AIUM Ultrasound Practice Accreditation

Partners for Women's Health has received renewed accreditation from the Ultrasound Practice Council of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) in the areas of gynecology and obstetrics. The practice achieved this recognition by meeting rigorous voluntary guidelines set by the diagnostic ultrasound profession. All facets of the practice were assessed, including the training and qualifications of physicians and sonographers, ultrasound equipment maintenance, documentation, storage and record-keeping practices, policies and procedures to protect patients and staff, plus quality assurance methods. In addition, the thoroughness, technical quality, and interpretation of the sonograms the practice performs were also evaluated.

Partners for Women's Health has held accreditation from AIUM for a number of years, and is now renewed for the next three years.

The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine is a multidisciplinary medical association of more than 9,200 physicians, sonographers and scientists dedicated to advancing the safe and effective use of ultrasound in medicine through professional and public education, research, development of guidelines, and accreditation.
