UPDATESNovember Is the Great American SmokeoutThe American Cancer Society marks the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November each year. This event encourages smokers to use that date as a starting point for making a plan to quit smoking. Some smokers use the Smokeout as their day to quit. By quitting, smokers take a major step toward a healthier life. Smoking tobacco--whether in cigarettes, cigars or pipes--is the single largest preventable cause of disease and early death in the United States. About 43.8 million Americans still smoke cigarettes--nearly 1 in 5 adults. As of 2010, there were also 13.2 million cigar smokers and 2.2 million who smoked a pipe. Smoking can lead to various forms of cancer, lung diseases such as emphysema, and heart disease. If you want to get pregnant or are pregnant, be aware that smoking can put your unborn child at risk. For those who want to quit, help is available. Visit www.cancer.org to learn more about the Great American Smokeout and ways to quit smoking. Your healthcare provider can also offer recommendations that can help you break the tobacco habit. It may be the single most important choice you make toward improving your health and prolonging your life.
